The race for the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup Golden Boot is on.
Awarded to the top scorer of the tournament, the best goalscorers on the planet will be vying for a chance to enter their names into the football history books. With a record eight games to play should teams reach the final, chances are plenty.
Kylian Mbappé is the man to beat at the 23rd edition, having scored eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final at the previous tournament. The Frenchman is only four goals off the all-time tournament record as well, certainly a source of extra motivation.
Could we see a first FIFA Golden Boot for one of the trailblazing stars of this era, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo? The new generation also has a plethora of contenders, from Norway’s Erling Haaland to Harry Kane of England.
Wingers cannot be ruled out of contention either: Ballon D’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior are proven goalscorers, as is teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
If players are tied for goals scored, whoever has more assists will rank higher and win the award. Whoever has played the fewest minutes in the tournament, and therefore has a higher goals-per-minute ratio, would separate a subsequent tie.
